Talk Of Contract Extension For Gaffer
Could Hughton Be In Line for New Deal?
Apologies for the lack of posts over the last few days but I generally find these international breaks a bit boring and this one has been no different with not a great deal happening other than Wayne Rooney apparently putting it where he shouldn't be! However a couple of articles caught my eye today talking about the subject of Chris Hughton's contract.
When he was given the job on a permanent basis last summer he was given a 2 year deal which obviously takes him up to the end of this season and there is a small amount of speculations and mutterings about whether talks have started about giving him a new one.
Personally I would leave it and see how the season pans out, I just don't see the point in rushing into things and after a decent season last season and a couple of decent results so far this season handing him a 3 or 4 year contract as a kneejerk reaction. How many times in the past have we given manager long lucrative contracts and ended up paying them off when they are sacked part way into them?
That may sound harsh and I don't mean that to sound like im criticising the manager and what he has done I just don't think there is any harm in waiting and seeing how the season pans out before discussing any kind of new deal. Of course maybe the club may be worried that should he do well then the lack of a new contract would leave him open to an approach from another team but in the greatest respect is that really going to happen and would he really leave the job he is currently in? I don't really think that is an issue myself, I think he will be here as long as he is wanted here.
I suppose on the flip side you may say that he deserves an extension and a show of continued support of the manager from the board would go down well with the players but like I say I just don't think there is any need to be discussing this at this point of the season. Im more than happy for him to stay but lets just see how things pan out.
The man himself has responded to the speculation in a considered and sensible manner as you would expect saying that whilst he would obviously be interested in an extension his primary focus at the moment is getting results. Thats the kind of sensible response we have come to expect from Hughton who certainly won't make an issue out of this.
Im sure the longer through the season it goes without an extension being signed the more the media will try and hype it up into something it isn't so on that score I suppose it may be worth getting something sorted. We shall see but like Chris himself says the primary focus at the moment should be results, there is plenty of time between now and the summer to discuss contracts etc.
What do people think, does Chris Hughton deserve an extension and if so what should the length of it be or is this not the right time to be discussing such things so early into the season?
