Huddersfield Town Home Preview 16/17

Terriers In Toon For Near Sell Out First Home Game

After the disappointment of last Friday's opening day Championship defeat to Fulham, Newcastle are back on home soil tomorrow looking to kick start their season as Huddersfield Town are the visitors to St James' Park.

It should be a good atmosphere with the game approaching a sell out which is ridiculous when you think this is a Championship game - I just hope the atmosphere and the occasion and the pressure that comes with that doesn't work against us.

There is a big expectation for us to simply steamroller this league but I think last week showed us all that simply isn't going to happen and Huddersfield are a decent side that got off to a winning start against Brentford last weekend so they will come full of confidence.

Not only that but I think teams will come to Newcastle knowing that if they can get at us and quiten the crowd then our players will be under pressure and for all hard work Rafa has put in with transfers etc I think there will be some issues in that dressing room mentally when games don't go our way.

I think a big thing we can do to hopefully get around that and repair the mental scars from last season is to try especially at home to get on the front foot early on and try and blow teams away a bit and not let them get a foothold.

At home I would like to see us go a bit more attacking although I think it is clear that Rafa does favour the 4-2-3-1 but even if he sticks with that then you maybe at least hope that the likes of Shelvey or Diame come into that midfield in place of one of the more defensive minded players like Colback or Hayden.

If you are going to sit 2 players in front of the defence then I think at home one of them needs to be a forward thinking player that can do a job defensively but is primarily looking to pull strings in there and get us on the front foot.

With a slight lack of strikers at the moment I think the 1 up top is also the obvious choice formation at the moment but hopefully we can give Gayle a lot more support than he got at Fulham.

My team for tomorrow would be a 4-2-3-1 of Sels, Janmaat, Mbemba, Lascelles, Dummett, Hayden, Shelvey, Aarons, Diame, Ritchie, Gayle.

I like Anita but he isn't a right winger so I would bring Aarons in for him. Perez could come in and also do that wide job but I'd prefer the natural width and pace of Aarons and after his poor showing in that number 10 role at Fulham then Diame would get the nod ahead of the Spaniard.

Of course I think it has been well documented that Le Sulk aka Moussa Sissoko is in the squad and in contention to play.

I know some people may say that whilst he is here then we should play him but I just think if he is in the team tomorrow that will just really dampen the mood of the crowd. No doubt some people will jeer him and get on his back and I just don't think it will do anyone any good especially when we have plenty of other options.

With a 52k crowd expected I really hope Rafa isn't stupid enough to play him and instantly nulify some of the positivity of a good crowd.

No doubt we will be the bookies favourites for this one but I think it will be close. Huddersfield have done well over the last 6 months or so as Jurgen Klopp's former protege David Wagner has instilled his German style pressing game on his squad and a squad that has also seen a lot of fresh faces come in this summer to bolster it.

A good win is needed to kickstart our season. 3 points is the main thing but it would be nice to also put in a good performance and maybe put a bit of a marker down to show we mean business and really erase what happened last week.
