Another Wake Up Call?

Second Defeat In A Row As Terriers Beat Magpies

Newcastle's start to life in the Championship continued to disappoint on Saturday as they suffered a 2-1 home defeat to Huddersfield that leaves them pointless two games in.

As with the Fulham game the victory for their opponents was well deserved and unlike the Fulham game where a couple of decisions didn't go our way we could have no complaints with this one.

An impressive Huddersfield side came and defended well, looked organised and then took their chances when they arrived.

Once again we looked pretty non-existent as a fluid attacking force and 2 bits of slack defending cost us dear.

The time for excuses and talk of wake up calls needs to stop and it is time for the players and the manager to start earning their corn.

I know a lot of people will be saying trust Rafa and it's early days etc which is fair enough but the worry for me is that after seeing 40 odd million spent on the side and a full pre season in charge for the manager we are seeing the same old problems and mistakes being made.

Looking at the side I don't think it's a case of the new players not gelling we just look devoid of ideas of how to create chances and break teams down which is what cost us so dear last season and to compound things we don't look any tighter at the back.

I also don't think the manager has any idea what his preferred 11 is - 4 changes were made on Saturday but there was little to show for that and the decision to start Ritchie on the bench and continue to play Anita wide was baffling. I have seen talk of Ritchie having a know etc but he looked absolutely fine when he came on in the second half.

It could have been so different had Dwight Gayle scored an early chance but he headed wide and from there Huddersfield worked themselves into the game.

Once again we conceded a goal right on half time and it was a goal that should have easily been stopped. Aarons who had a woeful half was disposessed and made no attempt to work back and as ever we then failed to stop a cross coming into our box.

Nakki Wells did what he does and reacted first to fire home.

With Ritchie coming on at half time for Aarons it did spark us into life a bit in the second half and we drew level through Gayle who followed up his own woeful penalty that was saved to head home after the referee had spotted a handball.

We pushed from there but without really testing the keeper and it was no surprise to see us fall to a sucker punch on the break late on as Mbemba was complacent and muscled off the ball to allow subtitute Payne to eventually fire home.

Perez and Armstrong came on from the bench but neither got themselves into the game. Attacking wise we just look clueless. There is lots of talk of getting another striker in but the problem for me is the supply line. There is no real creator in there that can run with the ball and make things happen in the final third.

Our whole gameplan doesn't seem to be about taking the game to teams, it still seems to be relying on passing the ball about and just hoping that the opposition make a mistake.

Diame made his debut but was absolutely annonymous and once again nobody can really come out of this game with any credit.

I know many will see this as being overly negative and maybe panicing to early but like I say the big worry for me isn't the fact we are losing games as such it is just more the fact that I can't see any kind of change or improvement from last season - in fact I would go as far to say that we are probably playing worse than how we were at the end of last season.

The players need to take a long hard look at themselves, toughen up and wise up quickly starting with Reading on Wednesday. The time for excuses is over.
