Rare Clean Sheet And A Win On The Road

Narrow Bristol City Win Makes It 2 Wins In A Week

Newcastle followed up Wednesday's home win against Reading with a hard fought 1-0 victory at Bristol City on Saturday to finally get our Championship season up and running.

It may not have been pretty and we may have ridden our luck at times but after the opening 2 defeats I think it is safe to say that the last 2 games have really just been about getting some wins on the board and hopefully the performances will come as the manager continues to tweak things.

A great Dwight Gayle finish on 19 minutes from a perfect Diame through ball won it and the Magpies were then able to see out the victory with a solid rear guard display although they did have to ride their luck slightly at times.

That won't have bothered the manager or the supporters too much as we finally won a game on the road after last season's disasterous away form that was a massive contributor to our relegation.

The manager again tinkered with the starting 11 with 3 changes from Wednesday. Not sure if the manager is simply trying to keep people fresh, still trying to find his preferred 11 or is simply trying to keep people on their toes but either way it is good to see us have decent options in various positions for once especially at the back.

This won't go down as a classic but it is one of those games I think when hopefully if the aim of promotion is achieved at the end of the season then this is one of those games and one of those kind of hard fought victories that we will look bacl on as being key to achieving that.

Great to see Gayle continuing to be in the goals that can only be good for him and the team and it was nice to see Diame come back in and get a good assist after a fairly low key and slightly disappointing debut against Huddersfield.

I still think there is a lot more to come from us especially once the window shuts and we know for sure who is going to be here for the foreseeable future and who isn't but up until then its great to finally be getting points on the board still.

The final positive from this game was that it marked the last game of Mitrovic's suspension so he brings another good option to the squad and you would expect he will get some game time in the cup game against Cheltenham on Tuesday.
