New Striker Acquired

Newcastle Sign Former Sunderland Front Man

Newcastle announced the signing of another former Sunderland player today and also replenished their quota of Daryl's with the capture of striker Daryl Murphy from Ipswich for an undisclosed fee.

The 33 year old has signed a 2 year contract and comes with a good pedigree of scoring goals at this level over the last couple of years.

A very Un-Newcastle signing given his age etc but I think it is clear that another option in the striking department was needed and this gives us another good option for what I presume was a fairly modest outlay given he was in the last year of his Ipswich contract I believe.

There have been many names linked over the last couple of weeks like Bas Dost etc but I think it was always unlikely someone like him would drop down to the Championship and I am sure other top flight teams would be ahead in the queue.

This signing makes sense really even if on the face of it it may not seem a glamour signing.

He knows the league, has scored goals in the league and I think at his age he is someone that can offer experience but at the same time will probably accept he isn't going to be starting every week.

Think it is a good bit of business by us not splashing a load of cash on someone that maybe won't always play and Murphy will offer a good alternative to Gayle, Mitrovic and Perez and I would guess that will now see Adam Armstrong go out on loan again. Good bit of business for all involved really and sensible business from us for once as the Rafa influence is again clear to see. No more of this must be under 26 rubbish.

Welcome to the club Daryl and if you score some goals we will forgive your mistakes of the past!
