Wolves Home Preview 16/17

Back To Home Conforts Looking To Keep Winning Run Going

Tomorrow sees us go into the first part of a Wolves double header as we take on Walter Zenga's men in the league at St James' Park before facing the same opposition on Tuesday night in the League Cup.

Whilst I think we all want to see us finally have a bit of a run in a cup competition we are all fully aware that the league is the priority so Saturday's game is certainly the most important of the two for me as we look to continue our winning run and cement our place at the top end of the table.

I have to say that although we should go into this one full of confidence I am slightly aprehensive about this game. That may sound stupid but I have supported Newcastle long enough to know that we are at our worst when we become complacent.

After winning 5 league games on the bounce with the latest win being a 6-0 away win at QPR and with Wolves having been hammered 4-0 at home to Barnsley on the same night I think many fans will be turning up tomorrow expecting a walkover.

That kind of atmosphere rarely suits us and I am pretty sure the manager will be drilling into his players that they cannot afford to be complacent.

Yes Wolves may have been hammered on Tuesday but there would be no better way for them to bounce back from that than to get something from tomorrows game. They should be well up for gaining a bit of redemption and we have to be wary of that.

Yes the players can afford to have a bit of a swagger at the minute but there is a fine line in football between confidence and over confidence.

After 2 good away wins we don't want to be wasting the opportunity of 3 more points at home but Wolves have some decent players so I think it could be a lot tougher than Tuesday night which was a bit of a freak result.

I am fully expecting the manager to shuffle his pack once again given the quick turnaround from the midweek games and to be honest it is becoming even harder every week to try and second guess the side we will put out.

The likes of Diame, Gayle and Mbemba missed out at Loftus Road so you would probably expect to see the likes of them return but at the same time how many changes can you really justify making when your team has just won 6-0?

For me the likes of Mitrovic for example need some game time although I suppose the cup game on Tuesday could offer that if the manger feels he needs to change things up again tomorrow.

As I have said before I have slightly mixed feelings on the squad rotation - at the minute it is working but I would like to see a bit of consistency in the lineup at times in order to maybe just get that extra bit of gel in our play but I think it is something Rafa will continue to do if he has the option to do so and like I say if results continue as they are then I can't really complain.

I just hope we are nice and positive following on from Tuesday and look to take the game to Wolves in a professional manner and come away with another 3 points in the bag and maybe a slight psychological edge going into Tuesday.

If changes are to be made for this one it would be nice to maybe see some of the new lads like Atsu etc but everyone that is on the fringes at the moment has a real task on their hands even making the bench given that a lot of people are playing so well at the moment.

For me the likes of Lascelles, Anita, Shelvey and Ritchie are probably undroppable at the moment but all the positions around them have plenty of options.

Opportunity is there to make a real statement of our intent tomorrow and really ramp up the pressure on Walter Zenga if we can inflict another defeat on them. Tuesday's results suggest there could be goals - lets just hope they are all ours!
