Quick Fire Double Avenges Wolves Reverse

Newcastle Progress To Round 4 Of EFL Cup

Newcastle last night avenged Saturday's league defeat to Wolves by beating their Championship opponents in the EFL Cup 3rd round to progress relitively comfortably into round 4.

There was once again plenty of changes from the manager but it was still a strong side that we put out and 2 quickfire goals a minute either side of the half hour mark from 2 of our form players ultimately won the tie.

First Matt Ritchie cut in from the right and played a neat one two with Jack Colback before finishing calmly and the Scottish international then supplied a cross from the right 2 minutes later that was met fantastically on the volley by Yoan Gouffran to add to the spectacular goal he scored at Derby a couple of weeks back.

That effectively ended the tie and although their were a couple of other chances at either end it was Newcastle that progressed to the next round, exacting at least a small bit of revenge in the process.

I would have preferred the league points on Saturday I think but in the grand scheme of things a good Cup run is certainly a positive thing.

Not only is it nice to be progressing after years of not taking the cups seriously and also in this cup you never know what can happen if the draw is kind to you but I also think at the minute with the size of our squad these extra cup games are good for getting players game time.

The likes of Darlow, Clark, Hanley, Murphy etc who are probably back up players until injuries and suspensions kick in all got some good minutes under their belts last night and all did ok too which gives the manager a bit of food for thought for the weekend.

The draw for the next round takes place after tonight's games so we will be hoiping for another good draw.

Part of me would maybe like to see a big game against a Premier League team at home but on the flipside it would be nice to get a easier draw that would maybe give us a better chance of progress.

Either way it is just nice to be taking the cups seriously again and it is also nice to be back to winning ways after the weekend defeat which was hopefully a blip and last nights game turns out to be the start of another winning run starting at Aston Villa on Saturday night.
