West Ham United Home 17/18 Preview

United Looking To Get Off The Mark Against Hammers

After last nights League Cup debacle a home game to West Ham on Saturday at least gives the Magpies a quick opportunity to try and get their season back on track after the much discussed disappointing start to the season that has seen 3 defeats from 3 in all competitions.

I am not a big fan of old footballing cliches but lets be honest here this can probably fall into the category of a 6 pointer even at this early stage of the season.

The knives are already out and a defeat at home to a team also looking for their first league points would leave the club in crisis on the eve of the close of the transfer window.

Of course a lot has been said about our transfer activity both by the fans and by Rafa Benitez who clearly isnt happy but I think the time for moaning has to come to an end and what will happen will or wont happen in the closing days of the window.

The manager needs to concentrate on the players he has got and do everything possible to try and get those 3 points on offer on Saturday that would at least release a bit of the pressure that is building quickly.

There were positives in the Spurs game before the game changing sending off of Shelvey but put simply the performances at Huddersfield and last night were not good enough simple as that.

That has nothing to do with transfers, we looked 2nd best in both games in fitness, desire and organisation which is really worrying. You can want to add more quality to your team for sure but at the minute what we have are not doing the basics and kind of have you wondering what they have actually been working on in pre season.

It will be interesting to see if we stick with the same lineup from Huddersfield. You would like to think the manager will shake things up a bit but on the other hand it isnt like many fringe players staked a claim last night.

The goalscorers Mitrovic and Aarons should certainly be options to consider - confidence should be high in both of them after scoring a couple of good goals last night that were probably the only real positives.

Defensively a lot will depend on the fitness of Florian Lejeune - hopefully if he is fit to return then that would probably allow Clark to move to left back which would at least mean we had a left footer there. Personally I would be getting Haidara drafted in temporarily rather than playing centre backs out of position but it seems he is well and truly out of favour along with the others we are looking to get rid of.

I would give Aarons a run instead of Atsu who was poor at Huddersfield and if Gayle isnt fit then certainly think after a goal last night Mitro deserves a start.

Other than that I think the personel wont change much but certainly the application has to improve from what we have seen so far.

West Ham will be disappointed with their start but to be fair their defeat last week came after a red card and away at Old Trafford on the first weekend was always going to be a big ask.

They will see this as a real opportunity to get their first 3 points and they have spent some money in the summer on some good quality like Hernandez who I think will be a big threat to our back 4.

Another defeat and we could be in crisis in what would probably be record time even for us!
